Media Training

Media Relations offers two training courses for staff, the in-house media awareness training and the external studio skills media training.

Media Awareness Training

Delivered by Communications staff, with a contributing journalist, Media Awareness Training aims to raise awareness among collegues of how they can work with the Communications Unit and media to promote their work.

The course looks at what options are open to staff to promote their work in the media and building media relationships. The session will also touch on crisis management and includes input from a local journalist with a question and answer section.

Studio based Media Training for Academics

Provided by Macmillan Media from their purpose-built studios at Belfast's Dublin Road, the course is delivered by award winning journalist/presenter Michael Macmillan.

The course content has been designed to simulate the experience of giving a real media interview - with the microphones, the spotlights, the camera, and of course, the tension! The training will prepare academics for all types of broadcast interviews including pre-recorded, live and down the line.

You will learn how to:

  • Get your key message across in interviews
  • Make the most of the power of image and how to overcome nerves
  • Adapt the message to your audience
  • Perform live and pre-recorded interviews
  • Use the soundbite culture to your advantage
  • Prepare and deal with those 'awkward' questions.

The interviews will be recorded for your own personal use and you will have a copy on DVD to refer back to, should you wish.

The course can be arranged for up to six people across a whole day, or for three people across a half day. Dates can be scheduled to suit your diary.

Should you wish to register for the course contact Judith Rance, 028 9097 5292, j.rance@qub.ac.uk
