Queen’s has climbed through the sustainability rankings, now in the top 4% of universities worldwide, having been in the top 7% last year.  

The QS Sustainability rankings assess which of the world’s universities are leading the way in social and environmental sustainability. Using a methodology comprised of indicators designed to measure an institution’s ability to tackle the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance (ESG) challenges, featuring nearly 1800 universities from around the world.  

While the University has been ranked 67th in the world for overall societal impact in the QS Sustainability Rankings, it has also achieved other notable successes. It has been ranked third in the world for Good Governance, demonstrating commitment to highlighting ethical leadership, transparent decision-making, fair hiring practices, and inclusive governance that empowers students. In addition to this, the University is ranked in the top 10 worldwide for Equality. 

This prestigious recognition reflects a number of initiatives and investments made by the University as part of its Strategy 2030, which has a strong focus on sustainability, and its ambitious Net Zero Plan.   

Commenting on the success, Professor Michael Alcorn, Associate Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Sustainability and Strategic Projects at Queen’s, said:  

“To be recognised globally for our commitment to sustainability is a tremendous achievement. Going into 2025, this will help to bolster our continued efforts as we journey towards Net Zero. In line with Strategy 2030 and our Net Zero Plan, we are actively embedding sustainability across all our activities and leading by example in areas such as equality, diversity and inclusion, sustainable procurement and a commitment to reducing our dependency on fossil fuels.”
