Mitchell Institute Director Delivers University of Bath Annual Lecture
On 31 October 2023, Mitchell Institute Director Professor Richard English delivered the University of Bath Centre for the Study of Violence Annual Lecture. Speaking on the subject of 'Studying Terrorisms in the Twenty-First Century', Professor English argued for an approach which rethinks geographies of understanding, to produce a more globally inclusive model of scholarship; for work which develops more genuinely interdisciplinary perspectives, and which draws on a wider range of academic disciplines more fully; for an avoidance of mechanistic periodizations within the history of terrorism; and for recognition that terrorism itself is less historically significant than the deeper issues from which it emerges, whether those of state legitimacy, rivalries within and between nationalisms, intra- or inter-religious dynamics, or the wider politics of states, nations, and empires.
