• Payment of tuition fees; 
• A maintenance award at the UK Research Councils' national rate (currently £19,237 per annum); 
• A research training support grant to fund the costs of study abroad, conference attendance and fieldwork;  
• Financial support to participate in a Northern Bridge Autumn Conference, an annual Summer School and a Completion and Leadership Workshop, which includes specialist training as well as events focusing on career development and enhancing your employability;  
• Financial support for placements and the acquisition of the skills necessary for you to complete your PhD to the highest standards.

Eligibility

Academic Qualifications and Experience 

Competition for Northern Bridge studentships is intense, and we require evidence of academic excellence at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as evidence that the candidate has sufficient research skills to undertake the project. 

This generally means a first-class or good upper-second undergraduate degree and performance at or around distinction level in a masters degree. 

In exceptional cases, candidates with lower qualifications may be considered if they can demonstrate that relevant professional practice or work experience has equipped them with equivalent academic and research skills. 

 

Citizenship and Eligibility 

All international students will be eligible to apply for Northern Bridge Consortium studentships, including EU and non-EU citizens.

Commencement of Awards 

To be eligible for a studentship in the next recruitment round you must be applying to commence a programme of doctoral study in the 2025/26 academic year, which starts 1 October 2025. 

Applicants who have already commenced their doctoral studies are eligible to apply providing they will have completed no more than 12 months of full-time or 24 months of part-time study by 1 October 2025. 

Awards cannot be deferred and selected candidates will be assumed to be starting their studies on 1 October 2025 unless there are exceptional circumstances.

The studentship competition is a two-stage process: 

Stage One: Postgraduate Application 

Applicants to both the Standard PhD and Collaborative Doctoral Award routes wishing to apply for a studentship must complete their chosen University’s online postgraduate application form and submit it by 7 January 2025. Currently registered students who meet the eligibility criteria should notify their school by 7 January 2025 of their intention to be considered for Northern Bridge funding.

It is vital that applicants to the Standard PhD route consult their prospective School or Department at the earliest opportunity so that the expertise and capacity to supervise the proposed research can be identified, and to ensure that you will be fully supported throughout the competition process. 

Stage Two: Applicant Nomination 

School/Department-based selection panels then select their strongest nominees on the basis of the applicant’s qualifications, research proposal, relevant experience and references. Those applicants will be asked to complete a Nomination Form, which must be submitted to the NBCDTP by 24 February 2025  by the applicant’s School/Department.  Nominations made after this date will not be considered. 

The results of the competition are expected to be announced on April 2025.
