Nursing and Midwifery Interviews

Welcome to our online candidate information page

The selection process for Nursing and Midwifery places in Northern Ireland will be different this year. Queen’s University Belfast and Ulster University, two of the main providers of Nursing and Midwifery education in Northern Ireland, have worked in partnership to develop a new selection process for Nursing and Midwifery courses. We want to ensure that the health and social care system has the best future nurses and midwives possible, and we have changed the selection process to help us to better achieve this goal. We are using an online interview platform, Modern Hire. Modern Hire is widely used by universities and corporations around the world for recruitment and selection.

The interviews will focus on the values and attributes required to be a Nursing or Midwifery professional. All interviews will be assessed by members of university staff, members of the Nursing and Midwifery professions and members of the universities’ patients and carers groups.

As you will not be attending the School of Nursing and Midwifery for interview this year, below we have included videos containing information about the School and Queen’s University. We hope you and your family members will take the opportunity to look at what the University has to offer.

Preparing for admissions interviews
The interviews for Nursing and Midwifery are designed to test each candidate's values and attributes, including non-cognitive skills such as:

• Resilience

• Maturity and Responsibility

• Interpersonal and communication skills

• Confidence

• Self Awareness

• Empathy

• Ethical and moral values

• Awareness of the demands of training as a nurse or a midwife

Invitations to interviews are being sent by email, and will be sent in batches.  All interviews will have 6 days in which you can complete and submit.  The first batch, issued on 4th March, closes on Thursday 10th March at 11.45pm.

Shortlisted candidates will only have to complete one interview for all of the Nursing & Midwifery programmes they have applied to in Queen's and Ulster; this interview will be considered for each programme they have been shortlisted for.

Please listen to the briefings found below on how best you can prepare for your interview.

Admissions Interview Checklist

Important information on what you need to do before your interview and on the day.  We advise that you don't leave it until the last minute, as sometimes technical issues arise and there needs to be time to get them resolved.

✓ Complete and return the online form

✓ Make sure you have a form of photo ID ready to show during your interview; we will also ask you for your UCAS ID, so have it ready

✓ Check your equipment is working well, particularly the webcam and audio. A laptop or PC will perform better than a mobile device.

✓ Find a quiet and uninterrupted space for the interview

✓ Use a plain and minimal background

✓ Ensure that your internet browser is up to date, and that your connection to the internet is stable.  A wired connection to the internet can be more reliable than wifi.

✓ Modern Hire advise using Google Chrome rather than any other browser.  Before you begin, close any other apps or tabs.

✓ Ensure you have sufficient battery (or electrical plug in)

✓ When you click through to the Modern Hire site, click on the red 'Begin' button to enter the interview platform - there will be videos, a practice area and resources there to help you prepare before you start the questions.

✓ Smile, try to relax, and breathe

Frequently asked questions

Please find below some frequently asked questions about the Nursing and Midwifery interview process, we would recommend you take some time to read through each of these

  • I've applied to both UU and QUB but I only have one interview. I do prefer one of them - will this affect my chances?

No - your interview will be scored independently, and the scores will be considered for all the courses you have applied to.

  • Who scores my interview?

Interview assessors will be drawn from Nursing and Midwifery teaching staff from both Universities, plus practising Nurses and Midwives, and trained members of our Patients and Carers groups.  Two people will assess each interview independently.

  • I live in a remote area and our broadband can be a bit patchy - what do you advise?

You will need a stable, reliable internet connection for the interview and it is your responsibility to make sure you have one.  We would suggest asking your local library if they have a space you can use, or your school or college.  If you are stuck get in touch and we'll get you a space on campus.

  • Do I need a webcam?

Yes - you need to make sure you have a working webcam and microphone, and test them before you start to make sure you can be seen and heard.  A desktop computer or laptop usually works best rather than a hand-held device such as, mobile phone or iPad. It is advised that you do not have any other browsers, programmes or applications opened at the same time. We also recommend using Google Chrome for a more secure experience.  Take some time to get comfortable using the system.

  • What should I wear?

Something smart, as if you were going to an in-person interview.  Modern Hire advise that patterns sometimes don't work well on screen, so perhaps something fairly plain.

  • Can I have someone with me to help?

No - you need to be alone in the room.  The interview will take about half an hour, so let friends and family know you're busy and make sure you're not interrupted.

  • Can I have a second attempt at the questions?

No - this is like a live interview - you get the question, and make your answer.  There is no opportunity to revisit and re-record your answers

  • How do I know it has worked?

After you have answered all the questions, review your interview to ensure all of your responses recorded properly. If there is a problem with your recorded interview, you will not be able to re-record the interview but you can report a problem to Modern Hire at: support@modernhire.com

  • Why are you using online interviews?

As part of the selection process for QUB Nursing & Midwifery courses, the Nursing & Midwifery council (NMC) has asked us to ensure that all candidates have a certain level of digital literacy, and can use an online platform such as Modern Hire.  So while the interview itself shows us your values and attributes, the act of completing it also shows us that you have the digital literacy you need.

  • What happens after the interview?

We will send your recording to two assessors to be scored; those scores are returned to us, and a statistician takes all the scores from all the candidates to UU and QUB and produces a ranked list - from the highest score to the lowest.  This is what each Admissions service will use to make offers.  Your score will determine whether or not you can be offered a place.

  • When will I hear if I have got an offer?

QUB Admissions service will issue offers via UCAS by the closing date of 19th May 2022.  If you are made an offer for a programme beginning in September, you will then need to undergo a criminal history check and an Occupational Health check over the summer.  February students will do the same processes in the autumn.

  • Can I get feedback?

If you are unsuccessful for QUB programmes we will let you know how to apply for feedback at the time.

  • If I click on the Get Started button on the email will it start the interview immediately?

No - you will land on the Modern Hire site - click the red Begin button to enter the site and begin getting to know the system and do some practice questions.

  • How do I prepare my device?

You should make sure you have a stable, secure internet connection.  You should double-check that your laptop or PC has done any software updates, and that you are using the latest version of the internet browser.  While you're recording, make sure to close any other apps or tabs.
