The Postgraduate Application Process: Step-by-Step Guide
Thinking of applying for postgraduate study at Queen's? MSc Marketing student Rosa details the application process step-by-step below.
The postgraduate application process is something that thousands of applicants go through every year, whether they are applying here at Queen’s or to another university - but there is a limited number of resources available on the application process. Something many people may not be aware of in terms of postgraduate applications is that it is usually easier and more affordable to apply - no complicated or expensive UCAS forms here!
So, if you are a prospective postgraduate student, here are some tips on how to begin your application process, with a step-by-step guide.
The Postgraduate experience at Queen's
Research your perfect course
It’s so important to know what you want to do, so thorough research when applying is necessary. I researched various universities for my PG study, but always found myself coming back to Queen’s. The marketing course appealed to me the most and provided the best opportunities for my future employment prospects. I think it’s imperative to ponder over a few different courses, even if you have your heart set on a particular course, just so you have considered all options. You may have your eyes on something and fall in love with another completely different area of study!

Apply via website
When applying to PG studies at Queen’s, I applied directly through the website. The Queen's Portal typically includes your basic information such as qualifications, undergraduate study, and contact details. Applications usually also include a personal statement, which allows you to explain your reasons for applying to the course and institution in mind. This is your chance to show why you are a good candidate for postgraduate study. Some universities may also ask for references. If you don’t already have them, consider asking previous lecturers.
Review application status
The following weeks will more than likely be spent checking your application status. And if you’ve been successful and been accepted to the course, this calls for celebration!
You may take some time to consider whether to accept the offer. Perhaps you have received another offer or are double-guessing your decision to do further study. It's a big decision, and it is normal to have doubts. From personal experience, if you decide to accept it's an incredible feeling, and the excitement sets in immediately.

Apply for funding
Funding for master’s degrees works differently from undergraduate studies. There is no maintenance loan, meaning you will have to support yourself through part-time employment, family, or savings. You may wish to consider this before applying, as often students take time out before studying for a Master’s to save money first. As I came straight from undergraduate study, having a lack of extra money came as a surprise, as I was used to having those payments from Student Finance NI spread out in installments throughout the year to help me during my studies!

Wait for the fun to start!
The next few months are a whirlwind of excitement to begin further study. You may be finishing up undergraduate studies, saying goodbye to full-time employment (and a full-time wage!), and getting ready to start a new journey. My advice to you is to prepare well for the year ahead, don't look at it as a daunting experience, treat it as a positive new path - and get excited! For many of you reading, your postgraduate study may be your last chance to experience university life, so make the most of it, one day you'll look back with fond memories!
