What do you think are the benefits of a postgraduate degree?

This postgraduate degree will enable me to acquire special and relevant skills and competencies that will boost public health outcomes in my home country (Zambia) and countries of the south in general. At a personal level, by obtaining this degree at one of the most prestigious universities in the United Kingdom, I will have upgraded my academic credentials, making me more competitive in the job market.

Why did you decide to pursue PG study?

I felt that I needed more knowledge, skills, and competencies so that I could add value to the needs of my country and the countries of the south. Being a medical doctor alone proved to be insufficient to meet my aspirations and the needs of my community. There was still a wide gap, especially in the sphere of public health issues.

What made Queen’s stand out from other universities during your initial research?

In my review, Northern Ireland had fairly good weather as opposed to where I did my undergraduate degree (Russia) or my home country where both have extreme weather patterns. It is extremely cold and hot respectively.  

Queen’s University Belfast had so many amenities within arm's length from grocery stores to nightlife amenities. It is a multicultural university accepting people from all walks of life with diverse backgrounds. Queen’s is one of the few universities in the UK that offers an MPH/GH.

Over and beyond the location made it attractive with the numerous water bodies and the beautiful ever-green scenery which is therapeutic and exactly the kind of environment needed by a student.

Why did you ultimately decide to move to Belfast and study at Queen’s?

I was granted a scholarship that met my expectations and the generosity and support extended to me are enabling me to gain knowledge and expertise that would not have been possible otherwise. I will in that regard forever be a Queen's ambassador that will promote the university's agenda.

How has the Queen’s Graduate School supported your postgraduate journey?

The opportunity to study on scholarship is a rare privilege and the support provided by this prestigious university allows me to access high-level competencies that will be a game changer in my country in terms of public health and health-related policies. 

How will your course at Queen’s help with your future career aspirations?

After graduation, I am convinced beyond reasonable doubt of a promotion at work to hold a position that will give me the authority to implement the abundant knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired at Queen’s. This will expose me to working with relevant partners of mutual interest to reinforce current public health programmes and the opportunity to introduce new ones based on the needs of the community with evidence-based knowledge acquired from my degree.

What skills have you developed as a result of your course?

I am already becoming competent in applying evidence-based scientific practices by using statistical methods to identify public health concerns and how these issues can be addressed. My critical thinking skills continue to improve, positively influencing my problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
