“The Pathway Bursary opened doors to my passion for film.”

“The bursary definitely took the pressure off whenever I had to study. I wasn’t under a lot of pressure to take up more hours at work because I knew I had the bursary to fall back on if I needed it.”

When I first thought about studying at Queen’s University, I had my heart set on Sociology. It was a subject I had taken at A-level, and I hadn’t really thought much beyond that. But then I took part in the Pathway Opportunity Programme, and everything changed.

We were introduced to a wide range of subjects, and I spent a lot of time in Queen’s Film Theatre. That experience sparked a new interest for me. As we were given film-related assignments, I found myself answering film questions with enthusiasm. I realised how much I loved the subject, which led me to research film studies further. Eventually, I knew this was what I wanted to pursue at university.

One of the biggest challenges I faced was ensuring I had the right tools for my degree. Thanks to the Pathway Bursary, I was able to buy an iMac in my first year.

This was a game-changer because I needed specific editing software, like iMovie, which I had experience with from using Macs in school. It was perfect for my needs, and I used it throughout all three years of my degree. Without the bursary, I wouldn’t have been able to afford this equipment, which was essential for my course.

The bursary allowed me to buy an iMac, and I used it throughout my whole three years. I probably wouldn’t have been able to do that without the support at the start.

In addition to the iMac, the bursary also helped with other course-related expenses, like buying hard drives and textbooks. Film studies requires a lot of specialised equipment and knowing that I had the financial support to cover these costs eased the pressure significantly.

Plus, since I received the bursary for all three years, I didn’t feel the need to overwork myself in a part-time job, which allowed me to focus more on my studies.

I’m currently working with the Widening Participation Unit on a programme called the Senior Academy. During my time at university, I worked as a Student Assistant with the Pathway Programme, and it was a truly rewarding experience. It boosted my confidence and made the transition to university life so much smoother. I loved it so much that I wanted to help others in the same way I was supported.

It really helped my confidence and really helped me going to university. So, I just wanted to help others do the same thing.

For anyone considering donating to the Pathway Bursary Fund, I can say first-hand how much it helps. I know many people who benefited from it, whether it was to reduce their workload so they could focus on studies, or to cover essential university costs such as textbooks and laptops. I was fortunate to live at home, but for those who have to move closer to campus, the bursary helps cover rent and bills, which can be a major stress relief.

Receiving the support through the Pathway Fund truly meant the world to me, and it continues to change lives for so many others.
