Overview

This computational project will investigate how microbes form stable communities and the role of niche specialisation in maintaining stability. Previous research has relied on genomes and pangenomes of laboratory isolated species, which do not capture the population level variation that exists within a microbial species. However, metagenomic data sequenced directly from the environment can be used to quantify this adaptive variation. The project will use Machine Learning approaches to assess the patterns of adaptive variation in microbiomes to reveal the rules underpinning stable microbial communities.
