Overview

The PhD student will work with Dr Mengyao Li in one of the following research areas: • Intergroup conflicts and collective trauma • Justice processes in post-conflict societies • Political resistance in non-democratic contexts Prospective applicants should consult Dr Li’s research profile (https://pure.qub.ac.uk/en/persons/mengyao-li) to suggest potential areas they may like to focus on.

Examples of areas Dr Li is prepared to supervise include:
Intergroup conflicts and collective trauma: This area focuses on the psychological underpinnings of large-scale intergroup conflicts and the long-term impact of collective trauma on victims, perpetrators, and the community.
Justice processes in post-conflict societies: This area focuses on the perceptions, appraisals, and consequences of different justice processes (e.g., retributive and restorative justice) following large-scale conflicts.
Political resistance in non-democratic contexts: This area focuses on the motivations and experiences of individuals and groups that engage in different modes of resistance in violent and repressive contexts.
Any PhD proposed project may involve different international contexts and employ a multi-methodological approach, including surveys, experiments, field experiments, and qualitative analyses. Prospective students should have experience with a range of research methods as well as advanced statistical techniques. Knowledge of qualitative methods will be a plus, but not required.
