Overview

Over recent years sulfoximines have emerged as an important motif in the pharmaceutical and crop protection industries, due in no small part to their stability, chirality, unique structure, and chemical versatility.

This project will explore the viability, scope, and synthetic potential of an unexplored metal-catalysed approach to cyclic vinyl sulfoximines. Preliminary results have been obtained showing that this reaction is viable, and this project will seek to optimize the initial hit, before expanding the methodology to generate a range of unusual sulfoximine-containing heterocycles. The project will provide training in advanced synthetic skills including handling air- and moisture-sensitive reagents and catalysts, and the use of core analytical techniques including NMR, LCMS and XRD. Regular group meetings, presenting at conferences and writing research and review articles under the supervision of the PI will ensure the student receives a rounded education in scientific communication. QUB also offers a range of training opportunities outside of the lab, available through the award-winning graduate school.
