Overview

As part of a large longitudinal study, this project will examine how manipulations during the early life period of dairy heifer calves influence multiple aspects of their development and welfare, with follow up continuing through to their first lactation.

Dairy heifer calves will be allocated to different treatment groups at birth and subsequently followed throughout their development and into their first lactation. Multiple measures relevant to health, welfare and performance will be taken throughout the project to identify approaches that enhance welfare. Measures taken will include, behaviour, physiological and immunological markers, microbiome, and performance.
