MSc | Postgraduate Taught
Sustainable Energy Systems with Management

- Entry year
- Academic Year 2025/26
- Entry requirements
- 2.1
- Attendance
- 1 year (Full-time)
- Places available
- 50 (Full Time)
This course is designed to provide the technical, managerial and sustainability skills that are essential to industry, academia and the public sector as we tackle climate change and implement Net Zero strategies.
You will develop competency and skills that include the latest advances in engineering disciplines related to energy systems, sustainability and economics. In addition to covering the latest engineering technology, you will be equipped with the creative, commercial and management skills that are necessary to be an innovator, entrepreneur and industry leader. As part of the programme, guest lectures are provided by industry professionals and research experts to show the practical implementation of the theoretical concepts of decarbonisation via real world examples.
The programme consists of 6 taught modules (120 CATS) running in Autumn and Spring semesters with a research Dissertation (60 CATS) undertaken during the Summer semester. Students may propose their own Dissertation topic (subject to review), or select from a variety of novel, industrially relevant research projects with access to unique laboratory facilities and technical expertise.
In the UK we are ranked 9th for Aerospace Engineering & 15th for Mechanical Engineering. We put emphasis on active, collaborative, problem-based learning, and invest heavily in our state-of-the-art facilities and flexible project spaces.

Teaching Times
Contact teaching time is typically scheduled on-campus throughout the working week (mornings and afternoons, Monday through Friday).Learning and Teaching
Students attend scheduled taught classes during the autumn and spring semesters. Each of these semesters involves 12 weeks of classes. The classes are scheduled over 3-days per week.
Additional Teaching Information:
The taught module content will be supplemented by guest seminars from industrial experts in the fields of energy systems and business management. These modules are assessed through a combination of practical sessions, independent coursework, and small group projects. A major individual project focuses on applying these taught skills to a relevant real-world problem. A dissertation is required for this individual project. The project will be taken in the summer semester for full-time students.
Project and dissertation work involves regular meetings with an academic advisor, with the remaining time devoted to project management, practical, design or computer work, and preparation for written and oral reporting.
Assessment
The way in which you are assessed will vary according to the learning objectives of each module. Assessments associated with the programme are outlined below:
- Individual and group coursework
- Continuous assessment
- Class test/quiz
- Project/dissertation thesis
- Oral presentation
- Interview
Modules
The information below is intended as an example only, featuring module details for the current year of study (2024/25). Modules are reviewed on an annual basis and may be subject to future changes – revised details will be published through Programme Specifications ahead of each academic year.

Entry requirements
Entrance requirements
Normally a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University in any of the following disciplines: Engineering or Science. Applicants from Medicine and Health, Business, Management, or a related discipline will be considered on case-by-case basis. All applicants will be expected to have good analytical and mathematical skills, to support complex engineering problem solving and design.
