Sociology is a discipline concerned with the explanation of social life and human behaviour. It equips students with the skills to understand the breadth of social experience, ranging from the global (including power and politics, norms, religion, conflict and peace, the digital world, climate change, racism, sexism and other forms of inequality) to the personal (including family life, intimacy, emotions, beliefs and mental health). Through theoretical tools and methodological techniques, Sociology at Queen’s provides students with a unique way of learning to explain the dynamics of social life as critical and engaged citizens.

World Class Facilities

Our School is based in three buildings in Belfast’s vibrant Queen’s Quarter, offering a welcoming and well-equipped environment for students and staff.
We provide student and staff common rooms, computer suites, and dedicated study spaces, including a student common room available Monday to Friday (9am–5pm), featuring seating, kitchen facilities, and computer access with printing.
Students also benefit from access to a wide range of software packages, with training available in industry-standard tools for qualitative and quantitative analysis, such as SPSS and NVivo.
Plus, enjoy the outstanding facilities of the McClay Library, home to 1.2 million volumes and 2,200 reader spaces.

Within the School, we offer the MRes in Social Science Research, designed to enhance research skills and provide in-depth knowledge of key topics and theoretical debates. This programme is ideal for those looking to develop advanced research capabilities.
We’re also excited to introduce our new MSc in Sociology and Global Inequality, launched in September 2024. This cutting-edge programme tackles one of the most pressing issues of our time—social inequalities—exploring their origins and how they manifest across cultural, religious, and political contexts. Courses are led by award-winning sociology staff, whose research on inequalities spans diverse approaches and regions across the world.
