The University Security Service provides a 24-hour security presence across the campus and is the primary contact in the event of all emergencies.
The team monitors the CCTV, intruder alarm, and fire alarm systems, as well as managing the access control system and enforcing the car parking regulations. The Security Service is committed to ensuring a safe and secure environment for all persons working, studying, and visiting the University campus.
In the case of an emergency where there is an imminent and serious danger to people or property, then the appropriate emergency services should be called. To do this from a University telephone, dial 2222 to contact the University Control Room operator or 9-999 to contact Police, Fire, and Ambulance services.
Our services include:
Manned Security Guarding | CCTV and Alarm Monitoring | Crime Prevention Advice
Access to Buildings | VIP/High Profile Event Security | Lost and Found Property
Winter Gritting Plan | Car Parking Enforcement

All Security staff are Security Industry Authority (SIA) licenced and vetted.
A uniformed security patrolling and response service is provided across the campus 24 hours per day, seven days per week, both on foot and in dedicated, branded Security vehicles.
They provide a response to alarm activations and are used to detect and deter crime.
- Crime Prevention Advice
Crime prevention advice is offered to all staff and students by contacting the Security Control Room on ext. 5099/98 or by email to security@qub.ac.uk.

- Access to Buildings
Most University buildings will be open during the ‘normal’ working/academic day and you do not need your card or any other device to gain access. The main location where you do need to use your Smart Card for access is the McClay Library.
The electronic access control system is managed by the Security Control Room.
Routine access control queries via telephone (ext.5098/99) or email (security@qub.ac.uk) will be responded to within three working days.
All requests to amend building opening or closing times must be submitted via the Estates Helpdesk at least 48 hours in advance.
Emergency Access
Security Control is able to facilitate emergency access to buildings by calling 028 90 975098/5099 (external) or ext. 5098/5099 (internal) and producing a valid staff/student card. Security Control is open 24/7.
Students
With the exception of McClay library, students typically do not need to use their Smart Cards for door access. However, some Schools do allow students controlled access to their buildings, for example in the evenings. Schools have already supplied Estates with the details of students who require their Cards to be enabled for building/door access. If you think you should have controlled access to a building/door, you should contact your School Manager.
Staff
If you have previously used a PIN code to gain access to any building, then you may be able to use your Smart Card instead.
Using your Smart Card instead of a PIN
For proximity readers, you can either enter your PIN code (followed by #) or hold your Smart Card within 2cm of the reader.
- Car Parking
University parking regulations are enforced by the Security team, including the immobilisation of vehicles.
Limited visitor parking is available in a number of car parks across the campus. This is facilitated via the online Car Park Management system through Queen’s Online. Spaces are allocated on a first come first served basis.
For help and advice on car parking at the University contact parking@qub.ac.uk or Nathan Booth via MS Teams.
