Self Service Password Reset

The Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) tool lets you change, reset, or unlock your account if it's locked (e.g., after too many failed sign-in attempts).

To use SSPR, you must be registered with at least two authentication methods, one of which must be the Microsoft Authenticator App.

Other recommended options are a mobile phone which can receive an SMS code or phone call, a non-Queen’s email address, or a landline phone number.

If you already use multi-factor authentication (MFA), you may be set up already. For more on MFA, visit the Digital and Information Services website.

Preparing for SSPR

To prepare for SSPR, sign into your account at https://mysignins.microsoft.com/security-info and ensure you have at least two verification methods listed.

If not, add more by selecting "Add method." Note: The University does not use "App password."

Password requirements:

Minimum 8 characters

Must contain characters from three of the following categories:

  • Uppercase letters
  • Lowercase letters
  • Numbers (0-9)
  • Symbols (~!@#$%^&*)

Cannot include your name/username or be a reused password.

We recommend using three random words combined with numbers and/or symbols, in line with this advice from the National Cyber Security Centre.

For more advice on passwords from the National Cyber Security Centre please click here.

If you've forgotten your password and cannot check your verification methods, please contact the IT Service Desk.

To make your password more secure, it is also advisable to:

  • avoid using a password that can be easily guessed (for example birthday, maiden name or family name)
  • avoid using a password that is similar to a previous one
