  • Understanding Pregnancy Dating

If you are considering abortion, it is important to understand how pregnancy is measured:

    • Pregnancy is dated from the first day of your last period or by ultrasound scan.
    • Home pregnancy tests stating ‘1-3 weeks pregnant’ can be misleading as they estimate from conception rather than the medical calculation from the last menstrual period.
    • The maximum reading on a home test is 3 weeks, regardless of how many weeks pregnant you actually are.

If you are unsure about how far along your pregnancy is, a healthcare provider can confirm this during your consultation.

  • Emotional Wellbeing and Counselling Support

The decision to have an abortion can be complex, and support is available for those who need it, both before and after the procedure.

    • NHS-funded Counselling – Available through the Belfast Trust Abortion Service.
    • Queen’s Student Wellbeing Service – Offers confidential guidance and signposting to relevant support services.
    • British Pregnancy Advisory Service (BPAS) – Provides free counselling for those considering or who have had an abortion.
