Searching the Literature

It is important that you can access relevant and appropriate literature but we understand this can be a challenging and sometimes daunting task. Brenda Allen, the Subject Librarian for Medicine, Health and Life Sciences has recorded two short video clips which will take you step by step through the process of completing a CINAHL or MEDLINE database search.

DOING A CINAHL SEARCH

In this video the librarian will complete a literature search using

DOING A MEDLINE SEARCH

In this video the librarian will complete a literature search using the MEDLINE database:

Test your knowledge of CINAHL and MEDLINE by attempting the following four questions. Feedback will be provided

Q1. Where are CINAHL and MEDLINE accessed from?

Q2. Do I need to login with my QUB username and password in order to access the QUB Library page

Q3. The CINAHL video provided by the librarian demonstrated a search for the terms 'depression' and then a second search for the term 'anxiety'. How might you refine the search for articles containing either 'depression' or 'anxiety'?

Q4. Limiters in a search include all of the following: Full Text, Gender, Cost, Length, Geography and Publication

In Phase 2 you will receive a lecture and CILG dedicated to literature searching but you can always make an appointment with library staff if you need further guidance or help. The library contact details for the School of Nursing and Midwifery can be found below,
