Welcome to this e-learning resource on reproductive care for men and women affected by HIV. Effective treatment now means more and more women and men affected by HIV are choosing to become parents and pregnancy has become an achievable goal. In addition, since the introduction of antenatal HIV testing, substantially more women and men are learning of their HIV diagnosis for the first time during their own or partner's pregnancy. The overall aim of this resource is to enhance healthcare professionals’ knowledge and awareness of both the medical and social concerns of HIV affected women and men in relation to conception, pregnancy and childbirth. Throughout the resource you will hear 'actors’ present real life stories based on qualitative research with women and men living with HIV. Healthcare professionals will also discuss current guidelines and their own clinical experiences.

You have the choice of completing two courses:

 

The full course (modules 1 - 6) will take approximately 3 hours to complete.

The objectives of the full course are to gain a better understanding of:

• Reproductive decision making for women and men when HIV is a factor

• The impact of receiving a positive HIV result during pregnancy

• Evidence based guidance on HIV and medical management in pregnancy

• Experience of pregnancy and childbirth for women and their partners when HIV is a factor

• The consequences of the psychosocial impact of HIV

Once you have completed all 6 modules you will be able to access the assessment which you must complete before printing a certificate of completion.

 

The short course (modules 1 and 2) will take approximately 1 hour to complete.

The objectives of the short course are to gain a better understanding of:

• HIV in the context of reproductive care

• Women’s and men’s experiences of reproductive care

• The consequences of the psychosocial impact of HIV

Once you have completed the 2 modules you will be able to access the assessment which you must complete before printing a certificate of completion.

 Before you begin, take time to listen to one midwife talk about her first experience of caring for an HIV positive woman. Maggie describes how there was 'a sense of panic' because she and her colleagues felt 'unprepared'. This experience led her to want to learn and understand more about HIV, which is what we hope you will achieve with this course....
