Young Persons Behaviour and Attitudes Survey

The Central Survey Unit has conducted a study on the behaviour and attitudes of young people in post-primary education in Northern Ireland. The Young Persons Behaviour and Attitudes Survey (YPBAS) is a school-based survey conducted among 11-16 year-olds. Three rounds of the survey have now taken place: the first in Autumn 2000, the second in Autumn 2003 and the third in Autumn 2007.

Findings

  • 10% Eat fruit less often than once a week
  • 21% of boys and 15% of girls eat vegetables less often than once a week or never
  • Only 11% of the sample achieved recommended target of 5 portions per day

In contrast

  • 73% eat biscuits everyday
  • 47% have confectionary everyday
  • 52% have savoury snacks at least once a day
  • 18% east chips once a day
