In the latest of our career exploration interviews, we are delighted to be joined by Dr Anthony Kavanagh who will share his career journey from being a Physicist to Senior Patent Counsel working for Key Patent Innovations. DR ANTHONY KAVANAGH

Anthony is Senior Patent Counsel for Key Patent Innovations: An Irish patent monetization company. Patent monetization exists at the intersection of law, technology, and business. Typically, it involves buying patents and then demonstrating the associated technology and inventions to implementers, to secure licensing agreements. Anthony spends his time evaluating technology and the promise in new business possibilities; and managing a legal team responsible for the development of KPI’s global patent portfolios and litigation.

Anthony previously worked in private practice as a patent attorney, mainly for multi-national companies, and was well known for obtaining and defending protection for innovation in fields such as AI and security. Over his time in private practice, Anthony advocated for inventions ranging from somersaulting robots to quilted slippers.

Before entering the world of patents, Anthony worked as a Physicist – completing his PhD in atomic Physics in QUB using measurements taken at the University of Electro-Communications in Tokyo; and working in medical device development, image processing, and computational optimization of treatments at the University of Oxford and the Institute of Cancer Research.
