Power, Politics and Territory in the 'New Northern Ireland': Girdwood Barracks and the Story of the Peace Process (Liverpool University Press, 2023) by Elizabeth DeYoung will be launched by Marianne Elliott, Professor Emerita, University of Liverpool. Joining Dr DeYoung at the launch will be Marissa McMahon, a Belfast-based organiser with Participation and the Practice of Rights (PPR) and a housing justice scholar.
The book’s key focus is one of Northern Ireland’s most controversial peace projects - the regeneration of the former Girdwood British Army Barracks in North Belfast. Girdwood’s redevelopment is a microcosm of the peace process itself, and the ways in which politics have failed to deliver a ‘shared future’ for the people of Northern Ireland, twenty-five years after the Good Friday Agreement. However, the book also recognizes the presence of activists challenging the status quo and reclaiming space through community work, protest and collective action.
Elizabeth DeYoung is a Research Scientist at the University of Pennsylvania’s Center for Guaranteed Income Research. She holds a PhD from the Institute of Irish Studies, University of Liverpool and an MA from the Institute of Irish Studies, Queens University Belfast.
This event will be in-person in the QUB Graduate School, Training Room 6, and online via MS Teams.
