Institute of Irish Studies, 27 University Square, 01/003
Time
16:30 - 18:00

By 1974 the relentless violence tormenting Northern Ireland had made its way to England causing widespread death and destruction. As violence escalated authorities were desperate to prove to an anxious public that they could defeat the IRA’s efforts to bring their ‘armed struggle’ to England. In London the Metropolitan Police resorted to a series of unorthodox and highly controversial strategies to prove their mettle. This seminar paper will address one of the more sensational cases involving Scotland Yard's Special Branch.

Rob Savage is a professor of history at Boston College where he teaches Irish, British and Atlantic World History. He has been awarded Visiting Fellowships at Venice International University, Trinity College Dublin; Queen’s University, Belfast; the University of Galway and the University of Edinburgh where he held a Leverhulme Fellowship. He has written five books and numerous articles and chapters exploring contemporary Irish and British history. His most recent book Northern Ireland, the BBC and Censorship in Thatcher’s Britain was published by Oxford University Press in 2022.
