Overview of this session
Join us for an insightful Postdoc Life Series information session delivered by Zara Birch from the Northern Ireland – High Performance Computing (NI-HPC) team, who will introduce the free high-performance computing support and resources available to researchers at Queen’s through the Kelvin2 Cluster. The NI-HPC team offers training and personalised guidance to researchers of all technical skill levels, helping them navigate and utilise Kelvin2 effectively.
In this session, Zara will provide researchers with all the information they need to get started, along with examples of current users and how their research has benefited from the NI-HPC.
Joining colleagues from NI-HCP at this session will be Digital Preservation Librarian, Kath Stevenson and Digital Scholarship Librarian, Ailie O’Hagan from Queen's who will introduce researchers to the new Digital Research Tool Kit, which provides a central hub for tools, guidance and resources to support researchers at every stage of the research life cycle.
We will also be joined by colleagues from the Queen's Sustainability Team to discuss the sustainability considerations surrounding using computing to enhance your research.
More about NI-HPC
Research computing covers many areas including the use of powerful supercomputers and management of data. QUB have a central team known as NI-HPC (Northern Ireland - High Performance Computing) whose role is to help researchers with their computer needs and data requirements.
Typically, researchers use a supercomputer whenever their computer needs will not run on their local PC. This could mean the local PC does not have enough CPU cores, RAM memory, hard disk space, the software required or it is just too slow in calculating results.
No matter what your technical skills the NI-HPC team are there to help. They offer training and/or a personal service to guide you through the process of using Kelvin2.
If you would like to know more about the NI-HPC service, or are an existing user and have questions on using Kelvin2 (the NI-HPC cluster) or want to find out about research data storage, then please drop into the session where a member of the team will be there to answer any questions.

The 'Postdoc Life' series
The 'Postdoc Life' series of information sessions aims at highlighting some of the internal and sector developments and initiatives to postdocs and research staff, in order to help them better understand and navigate their direct (Queen's) and wider (UK Research and Innovation sector) environment.
Sessions are organised several times per year, with topics informed by the PDC Representatives' Network. All postdocs and research staff can suggest future topics by contacting the PDC (pdc@qub.ac.uk) or their local representative.
