This free, in-person event is for social work students, practice teachers, academics and on-site supervisors. It’s a great opportunity to learn strategies to promote anti-oppressive practice through intentional and compassionate vs reactive interactions.

Professor Neil Abell (Florida State University) will share his Awareness/Acceptance/Action model and findings from research he conducted in Northern Ireland with social work students and practice teachers. The session will guide attendees to recognise how pre-existing prejudice and fear may distort social work practice or service delivery when unchecked judgmental attitudes undermine best intentions, professional standards and human rights. In a climate of stereotyping, racism, labelling and discrimination there has never been a better time to focus on ways to promote anti-oppressive practice and compassionate interactions.
