Former Queen’s Judge in Residence honoured

Former Judge in Residence at Queen’s The Rt Hon Sir Donnell Deeny was awarded a Doctor of Laws for distinction in public service today.

Sir Donnell Deeny will become a Doctor of Laws for distinction in public service. 

Sir Donnell has held a distinguished career in Law having served as a Barrister, Queen’s Counsel and High Court Judge in Northern Ireland before joining the Court of Appeal in 2017. He has also provided exceptional service through his roles in a variety of community and arts organisations including the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, the Irish Legal History Society and Opera Northern Ireland. Sir Donnell is also founder of the Ireland Professorship of Poetry.  

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Sir Donnell said: “I am delighted at such a signal honour from this famous seat of learning, with whom my family has been associated for more than a century, in recognition, I feel, of the impartial and conscientious service of Northern Ireland’s judges and of the arts and public bodies I have had the privilege of working with over many years.”
