Mary Lou McDonald addresses Brexit at Queen’s

Mary Lou McDonald, TD, President of Sinn Féin gave her first public speech in Northern Ireland since becoming President of Sinn Féin at a QPOL Brexit event in Queen’s University Belfast on Monday 26 March 2018.

The event was one of a series of leaders’ addresses on the theme of ‘Brexit: Challenges and Opportunities’.

Stressing the inevitability of change, the Sinn Féin President said: “I believe we have the responsibility to create a planned and agreed process of change. That is why we need the institutions at Stormont up and running”.  Mrs McDonald suggested that the British Irish Intergovernmental Conference should be convened to commence the process of returning to power sharing.

Following the address, Professor Richard English, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation and Engagement, chaired a lively question-and-answer session, in which issues such as the Irish language, the border, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were discussed.

Full details, including a video of the event, can be found on the Slugger O’Toole.
