Queen’s and the Department of Health celebrate 70 years of the NHS

Queen’s University and the Department of Health are jointly hosting a major lecture next month to help mark the 70th birthday of the NHS.

The guest speaker will be Professor Rafael Bengoa, the author of a landmark report on the need for the transformation of health and social care in Northern Ireland.

The lecture - on Tuesday, 12 June - is part of the Queen’s Policy Engagement series (QPol). It will be held at 1.30pm in the Queen’s University Belfast Medical Campus.

Professor Bengoa’s speech will examine the theme of reshaping health care for the next 70 years. It will look at the policy challenges and opportunities facing health and social care across much of the industrialised world, as technologies and treatments develop and life expectancy continues to increase.

Professor Bengoa chaired the expert panel that reviewed health and social care in Northern Ireland. Its October 2016 report, widely known as the Bengoa Report, set out a radical blueprint for transformation.

Professor Bengoa previously served as Minister for Health and Consumer affairs in the Basque Government from 2009 to 2012. He previously practised as a doctor in both hospital and primary care and was also the World Health Organisation Director in Copenhagen and Geneva. He is also a senior fellow of Harvard School of Public Health, Vice Chairman of the European Commission's advisory group Horizon 20/20 looking at health, demography and wellbeing and director of the health department at the Spanish Deusto Business School.

Department of Health Permanent Secretary Richard Pengelly, said: “I am delighted that we will be able to welcome Professor Bengoa back to Northern Ireland next month. With the 70th birthday of the health service approaching, it is an ideal time to focus on laying strong foundations for the next seven decades.

“That’s what transformation is about and we look forward to updating him on the life-changing work being driven forward across the health and social care system.”

Professor James McElnay Acting President and Vice-Chancellor at Queen’s University Belfast, commented: “Queen’s University is pleased to be working with the Department of Health to host Professor Bengoa’s milestone lecture marking 70 years of the NHS. It is appropriate that this event is being held at Northern Ireland’s Medical School facilities on the Queen’s University medical campus.

"Queen’s is proud to make a longstanding and significant contribution to the health service in Northern Ireland through the delivery of excellence in clinical research and education.”
