The Open Learning programme provides the opportunity to try something exciting and new, and offers a flexible approach to learning.

The new programme for Autumn and New Year offers a dynamic menu of new courses including ‘Teaching English to Migrants’ – offering skills to potential teachers of English, ‘Understanding Refugee Resettlement and Asylum’, ‘Migration in Literature and Film’ and ‘The First Americans’.

The forthcoming programme also offers a range of personal development and leisure courses including ‘Wine Tasting’, ‘Bird Watching’ and ‘Public Speaking’.

Director of Open Learning in the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen's University, Professor Tess Maginess said: “Our courses are open to everyone; you don’t need any qualifications and the style is informal and welcoming.

“Our new programme, as always, responds to the big topics of the day. We have a number of new courses focusing on the many and complex facts of emigration and immigration and some offering knowledge and skills to potential teachers of English and classroom assistants."

Responding to the environmental challenge, a new course ‘Wild Storytelling’ has also been introduced as well as interesting and unusual courses such as ‘Japanese Culture: Sesshu’s Masterpieces and Japanese Ghost paintings’, ‘The Social Context of Fashion in the Twentieth Century’ and ‘Storytelling: Making a Start on the Art of Telling Tales’.

Professor Maginess added: “How to welcome strangers to our shores, dealing with Covid and being more aware of our environment are all challenges for our times. Some courses offer a unique angle on the current pandemic like ‘Supporting our Immune System in This Time of Covid’, ‘A History of Pandemics’ and ‘Plagues and Pox: Medicine and Society in Early Modern Britain and Ireland’.

“We are very much looking forward to welcoming our faithful learners and new learners to the programme. The courses are all very affordable and concession rates apply to many of them.”
