Academics from the University’s Post Brexit Governance NI Project presented their work and discussed the impact of the Protocol with Mr Šefčovič and Queen’s students.

Welcoming Mr Šefčovič to Queen’s, Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Greer said: “At Queen’s we are committed to providing platforms for debate and discussion on significant societal issues. One of the biggest issues facing society in recent years has been Brexit and what it means for Northern Ireland. It was a pleasure to host Vice-President Šefčovič to update him on the important research by our academics on the Protocol and its implications.

The work of the Post-Brexit Governance NI project, for example, shines a light on some of the most complex challenges arising from Brexit and the Protocol for this region and identifies potential means of addressing them. Coming at such a critical time for UK-EU relations and the Protocol, this event was also a valuable opportunity for staff and students to put their own questions to Vice-President Šefčovič.”

Professor Katy Hayward added: “A common complaint about the Protocol is the lack of reliable information about it. We at Queen’s are determined to address this. This event is a brilliant opportunity to do so, with Vice President Šefčovič here in person to offer explanations and answers alongside presentation of the latest academic research on the topic.”
