Queen's comms team is best in class
The Strategic Communications directorate at Queen’s has been named as ‘in-house team of the year’ at the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA) annual DARE awards.
The event was held in the glamourous surroundings of the Merchant Hotel and was hosted by Conor Phillips of BBC Radio Ulster.
The citation said:
"The judges were particularly impressed by our winning team’s combination of fantastic results, smart use of resources, and a strategic media approach - including some brilliant expert placements.”
This is the first award recognition for the team since the new communications directorate was set up last year at Queen’s and comes at the end of a busy 15 months, with the huge international media coverage for Agreement 25 the highlight alongside a host of other major events and issues that have been in the public eye.
The directorate has also hosted a number of events, including Media in Conflict and Peace, which was attended by many of the journalists who covered the Troubles and the peace process, and the presentation of Chancellor’s medals to the former political editors of UTV and BBC respectively, Ken Reid and Stephen Grimason, who sadly passed away shortly after the event was held.
Dr Ryan Feeney, Vice President Strategic Engagement and External Affairs, said: “Effective communications is a significant part of any successful organisation. For that reason, Queen’s took a strategic decision last year to invest in a new directorate to build on our image and reputation and keep our students, staff, alumni, stakeholders and the general public informed about Queen’s.
“During the past year, the communications team has enhanced understanding of our important role in society by positively promoting all the great work that is undertaken across the university in so many different spheres.
“We have built an effective team that is respected by journalists and news organisations, has a strong, innovative social media presence and delivers excellent internal communications. It is fitting that this award is for the whole team as it reflects the teamwork approach that Queen’s applies right across the university.
