Midwifery graduate honours late mother’s memory with academic success
Caitlín Mooney graduates today with a degree in Midwifery after suffering the loss of her mother, she is now dedicated to supporting women and their families with compassion and care.
Caitlín Mooney graduates today with a degree in Midwifery, marking the culmination of an inspiring journey defined by resilience, determination, and a promise to her late mother.
Caitlín initially pursued a degree in Communication, Advertising, and Marketing but found her true calling during a placement year coordinating Ulster University’s student mental health campaign. She explains:
“That experience confirmed my interest in healthcare and pushed me to graduate and apply for nursing and midwifery. When I received offers for both, I chose midwifery, and I’ve never looked back.”
Caitlín’s final year, however, was marked by unimaginable heartache. Her mother passed away after a short battle with cancer, leaving Caitlín grappling with grief while completing her studies.
Despite the immense challenges, she kept a promise to her mother to finish her degree:
“Right up until the day she passed away, she motivated me to keep going, to follow my dreams, and to make her proud. On graduation day as hard as it will be not having her in the crowd, it will all be dedicated to Mummy, the woman and driving force who made me the woman and midwife I am today.”
Caitlín credits her peers alongside friends, family, and mental health professionals, for helping her navigate this difficult time:
“My midwifery peers were my rocks over the past year. Their support went beyond belief, and I truly couldn’t have made it through without them.”
Graduating today and having secured a position as a midwife in the Trust where she completed her placements, Caitlín reflects on the privilege of her profession:
“I love everything about the world of midwifery. The practical learning during my studies and my placements allowed me to transfer skills to real-world care and build confidence supporting women and their families.”
Today, Caitlín’s achievement is a heartfelt tribute to her mother’s legacy. She looks forward to a future dedicated to caring for others, inspired by the values her mother instilled in her.
