Dr Tim Skvortsov

Lecturer from the School of Pharmacy

School of Pharmacy

Dr Skvortsov is an expert in bacteriophages and their enzymes as novel antimicrobials and biotechnological tools.

The research conducted in Dr Skvorstov’s group is focussed on the development and use of bacteriophages and their enzymes as antimicrobial agents and biotechnological tools. Bacteriophages are viruses that infect and kill bacteria which have recently been attracting significant interest as potential alternatives or complementary therapies to antibiotics in the face of the worsening antibiotic resistance crisis.

In addition, lytic phage enzymes (such as endolysins and depolymerases) have applications across multiple sectors including healthcare, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, veterinary, and agri-food industry.

By combining experimental and computational approaches, we:

· Explore novel phage stabilisation and delivery approaches

· Investigate bacteriophage enzymes as antibacterials and antibiofilm agents

· Study interactions of bacteriophages and other antimicrobial agents

· Perform genomic analysis and genetic engineering of bacteriophages and their enzymes
