Richard Gallagher is a PhD candidate at the School of Arts, English and Languages. He will deliver a presentation titled ‘Investigating the Cinematic Representation of Northern Irish Unionists’.
This research finds that, although not as pronounced at times, there is a cinematic deficit in films about the conflict in and about Northern Ireland, commonly referred to as the Troubles, concerning Northern Irish unionists being presented more critically and less frequently than their Irish nationalist counterparts. Therefore a negation can be identified in the representation of this wide-ranging and diverse section of Northern Irish society. This research aims to provide an explanation as to why the cinematic deficit exists whilst offering a comprehensive analysis of Northern Irish unionist representation in fiction film from 1981.
