Visiting Scholar Dr Roz Goldie will deliver a presentation titled ‘The Poppy and the Black Ribbon: Counteract Dealing with Workplace Disputes during the NI Conflict’.
Mediating sectarian disputes was dangerous work in the 1990s. People were intimidated out of jobs and homes, or shot – some fatally. The trade union anti-sectarian unit Counteract developed a robust and uncompromising mediation service which dealt with many of these. To this day the Poppy remains contentious, if less violently than in the last century.
Roz is a Visiting Scholar at the George J. Mitchell for Global Peace, Security and Justice. This presentation pulls from her book, A Dangerous Pursuit, which will be published in the late spring of 2021.
This event will be hosted through Teams. You will receive a link and further information about how to join the meeting after confirming your attendance. While we can’t provide the wine or snacks this time, you are encouraged to bring your own!
Please register via email to mitchell.institute@qub.ac.uk by noon on Tuesday 23 March 2021. A meeting link will be sent to you before the event.
