The DfE Studentships are funded by the Department for the Economy (DFE), formerly Department for Employment and Learning (DEL).
The studentship may cover maintenance and fees for a maximum of three years.
- UK residents: fees plus maintenance
- Other EU residents: fees only
Research Proposal
You are required to submit a research proposal as part of your application for a PhD. In order to ensure that there is sufficient research expertise within the Faculty to supervise your project, it is recommended that you contact a member of academic staff to discuss your proposal. The academic can then advise if there is a potential supervisor available for this topic
Application
After you have made contact with an academic member of staff and a suitable research project has been identified, please complete an application form on the Queen’s University Postgraduate Applications Portal.
Please note that to conduct your research at the Mitchell Institute, at least one of your supervisors must be a member of staff or Fellow or Associate Fellow of the Institute. This information can be found here.
To be considered for a studentship at the Mitchell Institute, you will need to include the following wording in the Additional Information Section:

You must also include the following wording in the Funding Section:
I wish to be considered for DfE funding.
Deadline for Applications
The deadline for applications is Monday 20th January at 4pm. Applications submitted after this time will not be considered.
