Wounded healers, restorative justice, and ex-prisoner reentry

Although ex-prisoner leadership in the restorative justice field has received significant attention within Northern Ireland in relation to wider societal transformation, very little research has focused on the reflexive impact of the facilitator role.
In this article, Institute Fellow: Legacy, Dr Allely Albert, examines the way that such practitioner positions influence—and potentially improve—the reentry and desistance experiences of ex-prisoners serving as facilitators at Community Restorative Justice Ireland (CRJI). Through this case study, it is contended that the 'wounded healer' role can help former combatants overcome many of the challenges typically associated with reentry, not only enhancing mechanisms related to desistance, but shifting public perception as well.
