MAKING A GLOBAL IMPACT
We deliver a significant level of research and impact, through engagement with our valued European partners, and strive to build on our European successes.
Making a global impact through excellence in research and innovation across a range of disciplines is central to what we do at Queen's. We hope that you will work together with us, in partnership, to make vast advances in European Research tackling global issues.
We have had significant success in EU Research Programmes, most notably under Framework 7, Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe.
We have engaged in more than 125 Horizon 2020 projects, across 52 countries and in more than 800 collaborations.
We are committed to the enhancement of research training and teaching and offers postgraduate research opportunities across all fields of study.
The Graduate School at Queen’s is about intellectual challenge beyond disciplinary borders, personal effectiveness and skills development, promoting a culture of opportunity and enterprise, and a rich, diverse, inclusive social community.
We have a range of PhD opportunities, research projects and doctoral programmes:
SPARK is a Horizon 2020 MSCA COFUND Doctoral Programme that supports 20 interdisciplinary PhD students at Queen’s.
The ICONIC project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement.
We recruit, develop and nurture outstanding researchers who will deliver world-leading research and become our research leaders of the future.
“Queen’s University has strong connections both across the European Union and with other Irish universities. The University has an international focus and a strong vision for the European Union. Furthermore, Northern Ireland is uniquely placed in terms of the European Union and is an exciting place to conduct research.”
Professor Dagmar Schiek, School of Law
“Queen’s has a strong tradition in atomic, molecular and optical physics, which is my main field of investigation. Queen’s attracts some of the best research students in Ireland, UK and Europe alike, and this is an enormous asset for my group. I am grateful to the University for the enduring support to my group, which has been invaluable. As a working environment, the School of Mathematics and Physics is up where the best institutions in Europe belong.”
Professor Mauro Paternostro, School of Mathematics and Physics
RESEARCH SUPPORTING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The University’s research priorities are underpinned by four Global Research Institutes focusing on: health sciences; peace, security and justice; global food security; and future technologies. These map strongly across future EU priorities, supporting Sustainable Development Goals, tackling climate change and boosting competitiveness and growth.
We are also leading on the Innovation Strand of the Belfast Region City Deal, a UK Government funded, ambitious plan of around £350million to deliver excellence through innovation in clinical trials, advanced manufacturing, creative industries and digital technologies.
