Dr Katy Hayward, Reader, from the School of Social Sciences, Education and Social Work at Queen’s has spent several days in the US briefing academic and policy audiences on the latest developments on Brexit, the revised Withdrawal Agreement and its implications for Ireland/Northern Ireland.

Her visit coincided with the US House of Representatives unanimously passing a resolution calling for strict adherence to the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement during the next phase of the Brexit negotiations. Such renewed interest from Congress in the peace process comes at a time when the UK is making major decisions about its relationship with the US as well as with the EU.

Among the invitations which Dr Hayward accepted were ones to speak on a panel discussion at the University of Notre Dame with the former Taoiseach Enda Kenny, to deliver a seminar hosted by Glucksman Ireland House at New York University, and to present a briefing at Fordham Law School with senior lawyers with long experience of engagement in the peace process.

Dr Hayward also participated in a panel at a conference at Georgetown University co-organised with the University College Dublin’s Clinton Institute at on ‘Bridging the Atlantic’.

Speaking about the visit, Dr Hayward said: “The USA has made critical interventions in Northern Ireland over the course of the peace process. Now the enduring bipartisan and civic commitment of the US is about to be put to the test. It has been a privilege to be able to update such influential and engaged audiences on the latest developments in Brexit, which have such enormous implications for Northern Ireland.”
