  • The Scholarship

    We run an annual competition to select the best doctoral candidates and provide a comprehensive package of financial support over the duration of study, which includes: 

    • Payment of tuition fees at the UK Research Councils' Home rate; 
    • A maintenance award at the UK Research Councils' national rate (currently £17,668 per annum); 
    • A research training support grant to fund the costs of study abroad, conference attendance and fieldwork;  
    • Financial support to participate in the consortium's annual conferences, as well a chance to participate in a comprehensive suite of training activities. 
    • Financial support for placements and the acquisition of the skills necessary for you to complete your PhD to the highest standards. ‌

  • Number of Awards Available
    • In excess of 50 doctoral awards across all partner institutions. 
    • Two fully funded postgraduate studentships are awarded via the Action for Equality scheme.

  • Making your application

    Step One – Apply to QUB to be considered for a research degree programme (PhD) and indicate that you wish to be considered for a NINE DTP Scholarship.

    There are two processes which will happen concurrently: you need to apply to QUB to be accepted as a PhD candidate, and at the same time you will indicate that you wish to be considered by the NINE DTP for funding for your PhD. 

    You apply to QUB using the direct applications portal (DAP) and indicate that you wish to be considered for a funded scholarship from NINE DTP. The deadline for this is Monday 20 January 2025

    If you're a currently registered student who will have been registered for no longer than 12 months by 1 October 2025 then you are eligible to be considered for a NINE Scholarship. You should contact your schools PGR Administrator by 20 January 2025 and inform them of your wish to be included in the competition.

    Step Two - The NINE DTP Funding Competition

    Once the deadline has passed, schools will look at each application submitted which has indicated that they wish to be considered for NINE DTP funding. If your application is assessed to be of sufficient quality then they will contact you to confirm that you are proceeding to the next stage of the competition.
