Professor David Thompson to become Member of Academia Europaea
Congratulations to School of Nursing and Midwifery’s Professor David Thompson who has been invited to join the Academia Europaea as a member.
The Academia Europaea was founded in 1988, on the initiative of the UK's Royal Society and other National Academies in Europe. Academia Europaea is the only Europe-wide Academy with individual membership from Council of Europe states and other nations across the world. The organisations prides itself in attracting eminent, individual scientists and scholars, covering the full range of academic disciplines.
Professor David Thompson has been a professor since 1994 and holds professional qualifications in orthopaedic, general and mental health nursing. His focus is primarily concerned with developing research and practice in the field of cardiac rehabilitation and chronic cardiovascular disease management and using it to inform education and policy.
He is recognised as an international leading authority in cardiovascular nursing and cardiac rehabilitation and has made significant contributions in: synthesising and evaluating the evidence for cardiac rehabilitation; designing and evaluating novel early brief psychosocial interventions for cardiac patients/partners; and developing and validating disease-specific patient-reported outcome measures for cardiac patients. Key achievements in his career include holding the only chair in cardiovascular nursing in the UK and four international honorary/visiting professorships.
David will formally join the Academia Europaea in October 2019 at their annual conference which will be held in Barcelona.
