Records Management

What is Records Management?

Records Management is the administrative discipline concerned with the efficient and systematic control of the creation, receipt, maintenance, use and disposition of records in order to maintain evidence of and information about business activities and transactions. A record is any form of information that is created, received and maintained in the course of business and it can be in different media and formats. Records provide evidence of the activities and transactions taking place and the decisions made by an institution.

Queen’s recognises that the efficient management of its records is necessary to support its core functions of teaching and research, to comply with its legal and regulatory obligations and to allow for effective governance.

What are Records Retention Schedules?

A records retention schedule is a control document that sets out the minimum amount of time records have to be retained by an organisation. It identifies and describes an organisation’s records that have been created in the course of its business and it provides guidance and instructions for the retention and disposal of records in order to meet business needs and to fulfil legal and regulatory requirements. Further guidance on retention schedules is available here
