Membership of Senate
Senate, as the Governing Body of the University, carries overall responsibility for the mission, strategic vision, performance and governance of the charity “The Queen’s University of Belfast”. It consists of 23 charity trustees, the majority of whom are non-executive and are appointed/elected for a period of four years.
A vacancy has occurred in the external lay member constituency and under the Statutes of the University, Senate is now seeking to appoint a new member to act as a Trustee, with effect from 1 March 2025.
Senate has established a Special Committee with responsibility for bringing forward recommendations and this process is now underway. To facilitate this, the Committee now wishes to invite applications from persons suitable for consideration. Such individuals will be drawn, inter alia, from business; commerce; the professions; education (including the schools’ sector); the community; and public and other bodies associated with the work of the University.
Senate is committed to equality of opportunity and welcomes applications from all suitably qualified applicants irrespective of religious belief, gender, race, political opinion, age, disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or whether or not they have dependents. The University would particularly welcome applications from anyone who identifies with an under-represented group or community. It is essential that applicants can commit the time and energy necessary to the work of Senate, and its core Committees.
The position does not attract remuneration, but expenses necessarily incurred will be reimbursed. It should also be noted that lay members serve in an individual capacity and not as representatives of any organisation or corporate body.
An Information Booklet highlighting the role and responsibilities of a member of Senate is available to download from this page and includes an application form and equality monitoring form. Alternatively you can request a pack by email or hardcopy from senate@qub.ac.uk
Applications should be received within Governance and Senate Operations, The Chancellery by no later than 4.00 pm on Monday, 27 January 2025. All applicants must complete an equality monitoring form.
