James S. Armstrong, M.D.

James was born in April 1932 in Bellaghy, Northern Ireland to the late Samuel and Rose Armstrong. He graduated in 1956 from Queen’s with an MB.
In 1956 James worked in the Royal Victoria Hospital, training for 2 years in anaesthesia. During this time he met his late wife, June, and they immigrated to the United States of America in 1959.
He joined the staff of Jefferson Medical College before becoming the Director of Anaesthesia at Misericordia Hospital in Philadelphia, serving there from 1963 to 1973.
From 1974 to 1996, James was the Director of Cardiac Anaesthesia at the Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center in Camden, NJ. He was a clinical associate professor at Temple University Hospital and had a long running interest in training Certified Registered Nurse Anaesthetists (CRNA). He started the first school for CRNAs in NJ.
Through his life, James had a burning passion for tennis and golf. He was an avid supporter of the Philadelphia Eagles and 76ers. He stayed connected to his roots in Northern Ireland, often travelling back to visit family.
James is survived by his children, Mark Armstrong, Shelley Stricker, Laura Armstrong, and William Scott Armstrong
