Annual telethon campaign aims to raise funds to support students

Queen’s students have kicked off a telethon fundraising campaign to generate donations to the Queen’s Annual Fund. Over a five-week period, students will engage with graduates and supporters of the University to encourage support for various projects

Relying on philanthropic gifts from Queen’s supporters, the Annual Fund has been supporting students at Queen’s for 25 years through scholarships, student societies and wellbeing initiatives.

Last year the campaign raised just under £230k which supported a range of projects. They included a wellbeing programme equipping students with techniques to improve their mental health; the Teddy Bear Hospital initiative which enables medical students to teach young children about healthcare in primary schools; and the NI Schools Debating Competition taken forward by the Literific Society, raising the bar on public speaking and debating skills for Queen’s students.

Commenting on the campaign, Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Ian Greer, said:

"Philanthropy is a really important part of our work at Queen’s, helping to support students in their educational journey. The Annual Fund has provided great support to students over the past 25 years enabling the University’s alumni and friends to make a huge difference to the lives of many students.”

Pharmacy student Joel Hartley who volunteers with Queen’s Handy Helpers said:

"The Queen's Annual Fund and the work it supports helps to break down barriers and brings people together, working alongside each other to achieve something greater than themselves. And I think that's something that's quite inspiring to see, and definitely something inspiring to be part of."

Marlene Morrissey, Queen’s graduate and supporter of the Annual Fund added:

“I’m a firm believer that education changes lives and consequently, societies. As a long-term supporter of the Annual Fund, that’s a key motivator for me. When the students get involved with projects, they can continue to connect with each other and keep trying to make a difference. Supporting the fund can truly make a difference in people's lives."
