Queen’s graduate travels to the US for once in a lifetime internship opportunity

Limavady student Caoimhe McGonigle is heading to the US to start an internship with Emerald Isle Immigration Centre (EIIC) in New York.

Caoimhe will pick up one of two opportunities as part of the Queen’s-George Washington University Exchange Programme. Supported by Brian O’Dwyer, former Chair and one of the founders of the EIIC, and the Charles Lawrence Keith and Clara Miller Foundation, the position of Graduate Ambassador will be recruited annually from Queen’s and Dublin City University on a rotating basis.

Caoimhe graduated from Queen’s in July 2024 with a BA in History. She applied for an internship role with EICC to gain exposure to living and working abroad, broaden her horizons and meet new people.

She said: “I think this internship represents a once in a lifetime chance to immerse myself not only in American culture and a big city lifestyle, but also in the public and nonprofit sector - a line of work I was interested in before. I hope to be able to transfer the skills and experiences I have and apply them to a similar career at home.”

Caoimhe previously participated in the Queen’s and Belmont University summer scheme in 2023, which gave her the confidence boost to seek out other global job opportunities offered by Queen’s:

“I would like to thank Brian O'Dwyer for making this all possible. I am immensely looking forward to arriving in New York City.”

Brain O’Dwyer, founder and supporter of the scholarship added:

“I am delighted that a graduate of Queen’s will be aiding the good work of the Emerald Isle, while at the same time gaining valuable experience. I know that Queen’s has prepared her well.”
