The Vision
The Senator George J. Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queen’s is one of the University’s flagship Institutes, established in honour of Senator George J. Mitchell, former Chancellor of Queen’s and Chair of the negotiations which produced the 1998 Belfast/ Good Friday Agreement.
The Institute responds to the unprecedented challenge of building a peaceful, inclusive and secure world. It brings together researchers, practitioners, policymakers and peacebuilders from diverse backgrounds and world-leading expertise to make a difference to societies struggling with conflict, and to the lives of ordinary people who strive to build a peaceful, inclusive, just and secure world.
The vision and ethos of the Institute reflects Senator Mitchell’s spirit of inclusiveness, embracing and respecting all traditions and cultures, with a truly independent approach. It produces pioneering and influential research; it fosters transformative education and it is committed to societal engagement in pursuit of global peace, security and justice.
In response to these challenges and building on its global reputation and expertise the Institute’s future vision prioritises expanding the team of world leading researchers, increasing study opportunities for postgraduate students, and establishing a bespoke building to host an Institute of this stature and underpin its ambitions.
The Goals
The Queen’s University of Belfast Foundation is working to secure philanthropic funding to drive forward this exciting vision. This will be transformative for the work of the Institute, advancing its ambitions for research, education and societal transformation in pursuit of peace, security and justice, establishing it as:
- A landmark hub for inclusive and impactful debate, dialogue and partnerships that will contribute to the realisation of peace, security and justice in practice locally, nationally and globally;
- A catalyst for the acceleration of world leading research which defines our understanding of peace, security and justice;
- A training ground for new generations of future leaders and thinkers who will work to address this most pressing global challenge.
