What is a postgraduate HLA?

The Higher Level Apprenticeship (HLA) is a part-time programme fully funded by the Department for Education (DfE), designed to help students develop new skills and knowledge while continuing to work in their industry.

The programme lasts 2¾ years on a part-time basis, with the option to complete it in 2 years. Teaching takes place one day per week, while the other four days are spent working with your employer to apply your new skills.

“The postgraduate-level Construction and Project Management HLA is made up of nine modules (including a dissertation) worth a total of 180 CATS points; whereas BIM Project Management HLA students will take 8 modules including a dissertation, which are also worth 180 CATS points.

It is an excellent option for those looking to advance their career without taking a break from employment. Applicants must hold an undergraduate degree. For more detailed entry requirements, please visit the course links below.

How Does It Work?

You will need to have a job secured with a relevant employer before commencing the course in September. There are a few ways this can be done.

1. You Are Already in Employment

If you are already in employment within the construction industry, and you wish to remain at the company, have a chat with your employer and discuss the opportunity of pursuing the HLA with them supporting you as your employer. There is no cost to your employer and many benefits for them, as you enhance your skills and knowledge. If they would like to speak to us, we are more than happy to have a meeting. Email t.brooks@qub.ac.uk

2. You Are Not Already in Employment

If you are not already in employment but hold a relevant undergraduate degree and are interested in the HLA, you will need to find an employer. Many companies are hiring apprentices, please get in touch with us and we can direct you to them. Email askeps@qub.ac.uk for more information.
