Welcome To The HLA
Apprentice Hub
Where you will be able to learn more about the HLA’s we offer, the benefits of the HLA route, how to apply, discover employers actively recruiting apprentices and eligibility criteria.
At Queen’s we offer one Level 6 undergraduate HLA and a range of Level 7 postgraduate HLAs.

We currently have one Level 6 HLA. The Higher-Level Apprenticeship (HLA) in Civil Engineering at Queen's University Belfast.
While most Level 6 HLAs take up to six years. This unique five-year programme allows apprentices to complete the equivalent of a full BEng a year earlier.
This programme provides a robust foundation in civil engineering, covering essential topics such as structures, geotechnics, and modern construction methods. Typically, Apprentices work four days a week with their employer and dedicate one day to academic studies on campus. This ensures that Apprentices can transform academic teaching into real-world practice throughout the programme.
Like all of our HLAs, this course is fully funded for apprentices, meaning there are no student fees, making it an appealing option for those balancing work, study, and earning.
LEVEL 7- HIGHER LEVEL APPRENTICESHIPS
At Queen’s, we offer a range of postgraduate level 7 Higher Level Apprenticeships, each based on our well-established full-time Master's courses.
A Postgraduate Level 7 HLA is an ideal way to upskill in a specialised area, advancing your career without needing to take a break from employment. Whether you’re recently employed or looking for career development in a well-established role, these HLAs provide the perfect opportunity for professional growth.

Whether you’re considering an HLA to advance your career or your employer has suggested one to address skills gaps, the application process is straightforward for everyone.
For Applicants:
- With an Employer: Those already employed can apply with support from their current employer, allowing them to enhance their skills while continuing to work.
- Without an Employer: If you need employer support, Queen’s University Belfast can assist in connecting you with a suitable employer. For guidance, please email Andrea Mackey at a.mackey@qub.ac.uk.

The flexibility and support from staff on the HLA scheme is second to none. The lines of communication are very clear and it’s never an issue to get hold of somebody when you need them. So, it’s a very hands-on approach from the staff at Queen’s. Niall Moore
