Working with COVID-19 Virus – An Update
In June 2020, Ultan Power Professor of Molecular Virology at the Wellcome-Wolfson Institute for Experimental Medicine, commenced research in a bid to find a treatment for COVID-19.
The research project involves Professor Power and his team infect models of human lung tissue with the virus that causes COVID-19 in a Biosafety Level 3 Laboratory. Having established all of the appropriate risk assessments and codes of practice, the team will observe how the virus interacts with cells, what kind of damage it does and then assess the efficacy of the various types of drugs to considering screening once all of the appropriate protocols have been established.
Watch Professor Ultan Power and Dr Connor Bamford research update, explaining how they have handle the virus within the dedicated Biosafety Level 3 conditions.
